Unpermissioned Self: Proof of Being

Unpermissioned Self: Proof of Being

Unpermissioned Self — Proof of Being explores the portrait as a way of making presence visible. From painting and photography to media art, portraiture has always shaped how identity is seen, shared, and remembered. Today, that role has moved from walls to feeds, from fixed images to circulating profiles, avatars, and digital selves. Identity becomes something chosen, claimed, and continuously rearticulated: an unpermissioned self.

Set within decentralized networks, this shift also changes how presence is verified. Blockchain technologies allow images, ownership, and identity to exist beyond a single platform or authority. CryptoPunks are central to this history: artworks, collectibles, assets, and digital portraits that helped define how identity is signaled inside global online communities.

Bringing together artists who are also CryptoPunks holders, the exhibition asks what it means to give form to a self that moves between physical and digital spaces. Through abstraction, analog photography, Polaroids, blockchain systems, AI, robotics, glitch, sculpture, and purely digital processes, the works reflect on portraiture as something fluid, constructed, and shared. Together, they trace new ways of being seen, recognized, and remembered.
